I Am Kind: A Kindness Book for Kids

An Action-Oriented Kindness Book for Kids

All kids have been told to be nice, but do they understand exactly what that looks like? Instead of just telling children to be nice, we can show them how! I Am Kind: Kindness Practices for Kids translates kindness ideas into meaningful images for young minds to understand, learn, and put into practice.
I Am a Good Friend will help the child in your life develop healthy friendships – friendships that could last a life time!

Kind Kids Grow into Kind Adults

In I Am Kind, children first learn about kindness in the context of the Golden Rule from the “I Am” series kids, Andy, Angie, Arjun, and Annie. They then see seventeen specific acts of kindness to show them how to put the Golden Rule into practice. Instead of just hearing about abstract concepts like sharing, comforting, and appreciating, curious young minds will find examples of exactly what that looks like. They can see how Andy and friends are putting those ideas into action so they can, too.

What Makes I Am Kind Different from Other Kindness Books?

There are a lot of great books about kindness out there. I recommend that you read as many as you can, because learning compassion, empathy, and social skills don’t come from a single book or a single reading session. But different books come with different angles and advantages. Here’s how I Am Kind stands out from other kindness books you’ll find on Amazon or through a Google search.

Expert Input

Anyone can write a book, but with I Am Kind, you and your kiddos will benefit from decades of experience and education. Belle Green is the author of seven children’s books and creator of coloring pages and other products for kids. Sheri Moroe is a clinical psychotherapist with over 35 years of experience working with children in a professional setting. Together, they create a perfect blend of imagination and psychology, using just the right words to capture the attention of young minds.

Practical Application

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and especially when it comes to children’s picture books, it’s very true. When young minds can see ideas portrayed in a picture, it helps reinforce that concept. In this book, kiddos will see specific acts of kindness that they can learn, internalize, and more easily remember. That means the chances of displaying this new knowledge in real life is much greater, making the application of kindness a practical, everyday activity!

Relatable Characters

In I Am Kind, children don’t just learn concepts from adults. They learn alongside the team of kids throughout the story. Each picture portrays a real-life scene that little ones can see themselves in, from playing at the playground to grocery shopping. There’s also just the right amount of repetition; enough to learn and reinforce the concepts as you read without being distracting.

Diversity of Characters

We live in a diverse world, and children’s story books and picture books should reflect that. The characters in the I Am series represent a diverse group, with boys and girls from a variety of races and ethnicities. By including different types of kids, we make kindness concepts and social skill lessons more available to everyone. Kiddos can clearly see that while we don’t all look the same on the outside, kindness and empathy are for everyone.

Engaging Illustrations

When you read a story book with little ones, what captures most of their attention? The illustrations, right? In this book, your kiddos will enjoy picture after picture of bright, full-color, engaging illustrations that help convert those words into feelings, and those feelings into actions. Young readers will remember that giant golden key that represents the Golden Rule long after the book is read and closed!

What is Kindness? Andy and Friends Lead by Example

Being nice or acting with kindness can feel like philosophical concepts that can be challenging for young minds to grasp. But they do know how they like people to treat them! By wrapping kindness in the Golden Rule, to treat others the way you would like to be treated, children get a better idea of what kindness really means.

In I Am Kind, Andy, Angie, Arjun and Annie are learning alongside the reader, thinking about the emotions and feelings that kind actions make people have. Kids can then use those feelings to help them identify when they are being kind and when others are being kind to them. The book then launches into specific acts of kindness that young readers can then put into action in real life.

When it comes to basic kindness, sharing and caring are king. In I Am Kind, children will see the I Am kids acting out caring and generosity by sharing umbrellas and sweaters, providing comfort to a hurt friend, and spending time with the elderly who are often lonely. Your little ones will also be encouraged to apply kindness in the way they treat themselves and their own bodies!

It’s natural for a child to be focused on their own activities and their own needs. The whole world around them is offering new experiences every day! But when they see Andy, Angie and their friends helping out by carrying groceries, opening doors, and donating food, they can begin to apply these kindness principles for themselves. Take time to point out ways in which kids can be kind helpers every day!
A major focus of kindness for kids is including others. No one likes to be left out, but for young children it can be particularly devastating. In I Am Kind, children will see images of kids who are playing alone being invited to join the others. They’ll also see the importance of supporting friends by listening without interrupting and cheering others on from the sidelines.
Saying “thank you” is great, but there are more ways to show appreciation than just words. Especially for kids who will be making thank you gifts for teachers, friends, and other grown-ups in their lives, this is a great book to read. They will see the I Am kids lining up give thank you cards and gifts for their teachers, respectfully listening to friends, and giving time to elderly friends and grandparents.
Cultivating compassion and a sense of connection with others is something children learn and develop over time. In this story, the I Am kids are looking out for each other and for animals! If you’ve ever had to remind your child to be gentle, you’ll love how this book includes encouragement to use a soft touch with animals as well as give wildlife room to do their thing!
Who has a young child who loves to wait their turn? Nobody, right? If you’re like most parents and caregivers, it feels like trying to teach patience is an exercise in frustration. But by framing patience and waiting their turn in the context of kindness like your child will see in I Am Kind, it takes the focus off of their experience of impatience and turns it into a gift they can give to others.
You might not always think of it, but being polite and showing good manners is also part of the world of kindness. In this book, children are encouraged to use good manners, not just by using polite words (although that is part of it!) but also by listening when friends are speaking, and looking out for the safety of others.

In I Am Kind, children will find more than a story about kindness. They will learn, picture by picture, thoughtful ways to put kindness into action and make it a positive way of life. They will discover that they can create their own story of compassion, support, appreciation, and helpfulness one day at a time.

Don’t just imagine a picture book that motivates kids to act with kindness – add it to your collection! Choose I Am Kind, available now on Amazon.

Beyond the Book: How Else Can We Teach Kindness to Kids?

A kindness book is a great place to start, but it’s really just that. A beginning. Nurturing kindness in children and inspiring love for their fellow human beings is a non-stop adventure. Once you’ve read the book, keep kindness flowing by implementing some (or hopefully all!) of the following ideas.
The single most important way for children to learn kindness is to see it in the adults they look up to. You can read kindness books all day long, but if they observe grown ups being too busy to practice it themselves, well…I think we know what the result will be. The good news is that engaging in random acts of kindness is free and something we can do every day and in every interaction our kiddos see us in. Hold doors, pick up dropped items, clean up a mess you didn’t make, cheer for and encourage people – even strangers! It is true that we need to be the change, and for our children, we need to be the example.
People are going to be people. They won’t always be nice. Sometimes they will do things that we don’t understand. But rather than assume the worst, that someone is just a jerk, show your kids that sometimes people do things because they are hurting, or there is some other reason for how they are acting. Here is one of my favorite examples: slow drivers. Why is that person taking a turn at a snail’s pace? When I was growing up my mom decorated wedding cakes and would often drive them to the event. Imagine how nerve wracking that would be! So naturally, she drove slowly. Now when I’m behind someone taking their time, I say “They must have a cake in the back.” I’ve said it so often my son now pipes up with the same line. Assume the best – you might be correct, and you’ll always feel less stressed!
If you’re a fan of Mr. Rogers or Daniel Tiger, you might be familiar with the idea of looking for the helpers. One of the easiest and best kindness teachers is simply to be observant and point out those acts of kindness to our kids. See how that person helped out? Notice how those people are working together? We can also take note of those times when someone displayed the opposite of kindness and talk about how things might have gone better if they’d chosen to act differently.
Volunteering and donating are clearly great behaviors for children to emulate as they learn kindness. But a lot of volunteer opportunities are hard to do with a child, especially those that are more structured like food banks or organizations like Habitat for Humanity. But there are other, more practical ways that parents and caregivers can help. Sponsoring a food drive and then physically taking the donations to the food bank is easy for kids to understand and see people helping people. You can also participate in a meal train for a family or friend during a challenging time. Kids can help prepare the meal, then hold the buns or crackers or napkins when you go to drop it off.
Organizing a book drive for families in need is a good way to help out that kids can get in on, too. Gather new and used books from family and friends or through your church, then donate those books to homeless shelters, hospitals, or other charities that help families get back on their feet after hard times. (Nope, they don’t have to be just books about kindness – ask for all types of books!) People get free books and the kids get a practical, real-life lesson in kindness!
Word Kindness Day is recognized annually on November 13th. This is the perfect time not just to read a kindness book but to put that kindness into action. Volunteer, donate, give a neighbor a hand, or simply do something to spread cheer and joy. Littles can then draw their own picture of an act of kindness they saw or participated in to commemorate the day! It’s a great way to learn and grow a family kindness practice!

In I Am Kind, children will find more than a story about kindness. They will learn, picture by picture, thoughtful ways to put kindness into action and make it a positive way of life. They will discover that they can create their own story of compassion, support, appreciation, and helpfulness one day at a time.

Taking Time to Read: Mission Critical for Kids

We often hear how important it is to read books with our kids. But why is it so important, and how can we be intentional about making time to read on a regular basis? Whether it’s a classic story, an adventure-filled picture book, or a new fun book of rhymes, here’s the why and how of reading with children.
read books build brains min

Read Books, Build Brains

Reading books to young children, from birth all the way up through elementary school, builds mental and emotional skills in ways that few other activities can do. Even the youngest pre-readers learn  pre-literacy skills like understanding print, page turning, and listening skills. When we read with a child, they learn basic skills like language, grammar, and vocabulary. They build cognitive skills including critical thinking, memory, and the ever-important faculty of imagination. Reading also encourages focus and attention as kiddos learn to listen carefully to the story. Finally, when we choose to read books about kindness, friendship, and feelings, children build social skills, empathy, and situational awareness.

How to Make Time to Read

It can feel daunting to add yet another to-do item to your daily routine. But once you implement a reading ritual, you and your kiddos will quickly come to look forward to this special time in your day. Try to keep it consistent, reading after meals or before bed. (Bedtime stories aren’t just for toddlers and preschoolers! My 10-year-old and I still read books together every night. We often try to read new books related to the season we’re in, an upcoming holiday, event, or trip.)

You can also keep it short, especially to start. Five or ten minutes is plenty for the littlest ones, and you can work up to longer periods of reading as they get older. Choose books on topics that they are interested in, and let them choose the book whenever possible. Make it extra special by creating a cozy reading nook. Let them add their own flair by picking colors, pillows, or drawing a picture to decorate the reading nook wall. Any child will love a comfy space that feels like they are in their own little den or hideout, making it all that much more appealing to read those books!

How to Get the Most Out of Reading

To get the most out of the times you read books with the little ones, here are a few tips. As you read, make comments and ask questions. This will help them remember the story better, connect with the characters and the message, and also encourages good listening. Consistency is also key. Try to make sure to read daily, and ideally, at the same time each day to build a habit and a strong, stable foundation. Finally, choose age-appropriate books. When we read books that are too advanced, kiddos lose interest and stop listening. Not advanced enough? That leads to boredom and you guessed it – not listening! Challenge them just a little bit each time you read together and keep their attention maxed out.

The Belle Green World: Confident and Connected Kids

You have lots of choices when it comes to children’s story books, coloring pages, and other products for kids, especially when you do a quick Google or Amazon search. What makes Belle Green books different? It all comes down to the power of words. My books are filled with purpose and passion, fun and relatable characters, and are designed to propel your child forward in confidence, empathy, and of course, kindness!

The words we use have tremendous power. Especially when it comes to children, the words we choose can create a story of curiosity and confidence or uncertainty and apprehension. As parents, teachers, and caregivers, we have an opportunity and a responsibility to use our words to build up children with encouragement for healthy self-esteem. Story books like those from the Belle Green collection are just one way to do that. We can help them write their own story of confidence, kindness, and caring relationships with their peers and with adults, if only we choose the right words.

Because of my focus on appropriate wording for my books, I decided to partner with Sheri Moroe for my feelings books, the I Am series. With her knowledge and education in the field of psychology (she holds a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Psychology and is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor) she brings a rich understanding of the inner workings of a child’s mind. Sheri is also a Nationally Certified Counselor and has been working with children for more than 35 years. This means that she doesn’t just have the knowledge, she also knows how to use it. She has my unending gratitude for her assistance in creating these story books!

Humans are interesting creatures in that whatever we say after “I am” we tend to become. That’s why this wording is so critical to young minds. We must teach them to use these words carefully and only to say good and positive things after “I am.” That’s why I created the I Am series of books – to help children harness the power of I Am and build self-worth, confidence, healthy friendships, and strong social skills including kindness!
The first book in this series is I Am Good in My Heart. Many times children hear behavioral correction using the word “bad.” They can then begin to think that they are bad instead of their behavior being undesirable. I Am Good in My Heart shows young readers that even when they do the wrong thing (accidentally or on purpose), they are still good in their heart and have the ability to make a better, more positive choice next time. I Am Good in My Heart sets the stage for the next book about friendship.

I Am a Good Friend, the most popular book in the I Am series of books, focuses on building and navigating healthy friendships. Getting started in the new world of forging friendships can be challenging for preschool and kindergarten kiddos, but with I Am a Good Friend they will learn about sharing, taking turns, standing up for and looking out for friends who may be experiencing teasing or who have food allergies. I Am a Good Friend is available on Amazon in both e-book and paperback formats.

The third book in the I Am series of books is I Am Bigger. If you have a toddler or preschooler who is excited to be bigger and do more things on their own but struggles to recognize when they still need help, this story book is for you. I Am Bigger celebrates children as they grow in size and new capabilities, but also helps them understand that sometimes they still need help from grown up, and that’s okay! I Am Bigger is available on Amazon in e-book and paperback versions.
All the I Am series books were written with love, experience, and a passion for strong and capable children. They make great gifts as well as routine new additions to your home or classroom library. Whether it’s Christmas, World Kindness Day, or simply Tuesday, take the time to read one of these thoughtful, positive books with your children. Add I Am Good in My Heart, I Am a Good Friend, and I Am Bigger to your home library – the whole family will love them!

Beyond the I Am series, you’ll also find two Belle Green robot books and a sweet book of rhymes for Valentine’s Day. In Tip the Lunchtime Robot, your children will enjoy a rhyming story about a cleaning robot who longs to be a chef. Will she be able to use her love of cooking to realize her dreams? Tip is available on Amazon in both paperback and e-book and will inspire young minds to follow their hearts.

Do your little ones love superheroes? Then Robot Activated! is the book for them! Join the Rescue Robot as he saves a train full of teddy bears, struggling through rain and mud to save the day. In addition to being a fun and exciting rhyming story, Robot Activated! is a book that encourages perseverance and not giving up. This sweet picture book is also available on Amazon in both paperback and e-book.

Finally, on the holiday that celebrates love, your kiddos will enjoy the fun and sweet poems in Valentine’s Day Rhymes.  From different types of hugs to cupid in disguise, these fun to read story poems will engage and delight young minds. This book is currently available on Amazon in e-book format only. It’s the perfect last-minute gift to send to grandchildren and nieces and nephews for Valentine’s Day.

How many coloring books do you have? Kiddos love to color. But with download and print coloring pages from Belle Green, they can also learn while they do it! Perfect for ages 3-6, children can learn shapes with Robot Shapes coloring pages and learn January through December with Robot Months of the Year coloring pages. As the perfect complement to their new I Am Kind book, you can reinforce the acts of kindness shown with the I Am Kind kindness coloring pages! Coloring pages are a great way for little ones to learn basic concepts, including shapes, spelling, and interpersonal skills including kindness. They are also good for developing fine motor skills, decision making (should this picture be green or purple?), and artistic expression (both green and purple!).

Also available for Valentine’s Day, your family will love these printable Robot Valentines! Choose between pre-colored and DIY coloring, or go with a mix of both! Robot Valentines also come with images to color on their own that are spot-on for decorating a child’s Valentine box for school or parties. If your kiddo’s school party snuck up on you, don’t worry. You don’t have to wait for Amazon to deliver because these Valentines are instantly available. They are print on demand, picture perfect, and so much fun for little ones who love robots!
