When a Loved One is Sick: 9 Ways Kids Can Help

Now that you’ve got the kids working on the coloring pages for your under-the-weather friend or family member, let’s talk about some other ways the kiddos can help lift their spirits during a difficult time. When people are sick, often all they need is to know that others care and are thinking about them. Above and beyond sending them this cute and sweet get well soon coloring page, here are nine kid-friendly ideas for morale boosters.

Create a Fun or Silly Video

Especially when you can’t visit in person, making a video is the perfect way for a child to let someone know they care. Kids are often naturally drawn to performing on video and can come up with the most hilarious and sweet things to say on their own. If your kiddo is more on the shy side, try sitting with them and singing a song together (You Are My Sunshine is a classic favorite and easy for little ones to remember). For older camera-shy kids, have them read a poem. Either way, your sick or injured loved one will soon be feeling the good vibrations.

Make Paper Flowers

If real flowers aren’t going to happen, or if the kiddos want to give their own in addition to real ones, paper flowers are the perfect choice. You can print flowers as coloring pages or have them fold and cut flowers using a tutorial like this. Glue those beauties to a green string of yarn and they can be hung anywhere from bedsides to lamps to windows, and the recovering person will think of you every time they see them! Kids love crafts, and these paper flowers add a pop of color to any room, bringing more love and joy to their recovery. (Psst – if it’s Christmas time, use red colored paper to make those flowers poinsettias!) They are the perfect accompaniment to get well soon coloring pages!

Visit In Person

If you’re able to visit in person, this is one of the most important things you can do. Human touch is healing to the body, and studies show time and time again that caring human contact helps people get better faster. So whether they are fighting a bacterial infection, recovering from surgery, or recuperating from a car accident, your presence matters. If they are in a hospital or other care facility, make sure ahead of time that they allow children and, if so, when visitors are allowed. Discuss with your child how important it is to be gentle, calm, and respectful while visiting. If you’re bringing crafts or food along with you that day, have the children decorate the bag while they are coloring their get well soon coloring pages.

Help With Chores

If the recipient of your get well soon coloring page is at home, see if they need help with anything. Kids can assist with taking out trash, delivering items to their bedside, taking care of pets, and other tasks that are simple – but hard to do when you’re stuck in bed. Children love to be helpful and see that their efforts are valuable. Your ill friend or family member will appreciate the help, and the beaming smiles and uplifting enthusiasm from the kiddos.

Delivering Food

Have your child help choose food and snacks for the under the weather friend. Especially when it comes to snacks, little ones are on top of it. Encourage them to choose healthy snacks and items high in Vitamin C. You can also include extra tissue boxes in this care package or other items specific to their condition. Many (many) years ago my family was all quarantined with scarlet fever, which is quite serious. It was close to Christmas, and some local family members brought a box filled with food and Christmas gifts. They left it at the end of the driveway, waved, and drove off. It meant the world to my mom, and even though they weren’t able to come in and give hugs, this gesture of love has stuck with our family across the decades since the illness.

Help Celebrate Holidays

It’s hard to be feeling rough over the holidays, especially Christmas. If your loved one is ill over a holiday, do what you can to help them feel included in the festivities. Christmas caroling, making Valentine’s cards, jumping on a video chat to share a fireworks display, and bringing them a hot Thanksgiving meal (have the kiddos make a cute placemat!) are all ways to bring the holidays to them.

Create or Give Crafts as Gifts

Being stuck in bed day after day gets boring. If the ill person has any interest in crafts, bring them a kit or two to help them pass the time. Cross stitch and other needlepoint work are perfect for this, and who knows – you might help them get a new hobby! If they aren’t the type to do crafts, then have the kids make crafts for them as a gift. They can make a picture frame for the get well soon coloring page, painted rocks, painted magnet kits, any type of artwork, crafts with wood and felt, and so on.

Do a quick search on Amazon for craft kits for kids and you’ll have tons of options. Go ahead and make it feel like Christmas for them, no matter the time of year.

A young girl holds up a cute drawing she made and shows it to her grandmother who is sick in the hospital.

Give Entertainment in Print

Outside of crafts, you can give game books like word search or crossword puzzle books. They can get a break from the TV or their phone and exercise their brain with books in print while their body recovers! There are even coloring pages for adults which have been shown to be very calming and therapeutic. Series fiction books are also excellent gifts as their pages soon transport the reader to a different world – a world where they aren’t sick in bed. Find out their favorite genre and get them hooked on a new series!

Get Well Soon Prayers

Much has been studied about the power of prayer, and whether it works the way we think it does or not. No matter what you believe about God, the universe, prayer, or meditation, rarely will a person say, “No, don’t pray for me.” So if you’re open to it (and they are too) have the kids offer to pray for them. But just as importantly, actually do it. Make sure children get the message that we do what we say we will do and genuinely put it out to the divine that we want them to get well soon. Also, religious activities including prayer have been associated with overall better health, so prayer is good for the pray-er as well as the one prayed for. Don’t be afraid to offer up those get well soon prayers and meditations – it’s free!

Hopefully these ideas will inspire you and the kiddos to go the extra mile for a loved one in need. Alongside their get well soon coloring page, any and all of these bonuses will be appreciated and yes, will make a difference. Color their world with better health!

Get Well Visiting Dos and Don’ts

Learning and practicing kindness and giving when others are unwell is a beautiful teaching to share with our kiddos. But we also need to make sure we understand boundaries so that our efforts do the greatest good and do no harm. While the little ones are coloring and decorating their get well soon coloring pages, go over these tips with them.

Do Help Kids Understand Chronic Illness

For most little ones, understanding acute illness or injuries is pretty simple. They’ve all had a tummy ache, a fever, or a booboo. They get it. But they might not get serious or chronic illnesses like cancer, autoimmune disease, or spinal injuries with long-term damage. As they are old enough, do your best to explain why Auntie or Uncle doesn’t “look sick” during an episode or a flare up, or why they may not feel better as soon as they would like.

Don’t Show Up Unannounced

Surprises are great for birthdays, but when it comes to visiting the ill always get the green light from them ahead of time. Even for people who usually love surprise visits, it’s best to check in advance in case things have taken a turn for the worse and visits are not advisable.

Do Respect Their Boundaries

You don’t want to stay too long and risk taxing an already tired body. Ask how long they would like company, and stick to those boundaries. They can always let you know if you’re leaving too soon! The hospital or care facility may also have limits on how long your visit can be.

Don’t Try to Give Too Much Advice

Everyone wants them to get well soon, but be careful about overwhelming them with too much help. If you have something genuinely helpful, ask if they would like the information first. You can always leave info with them and they can review it if they feel up to it. No matter what, keep it light and zero pressure.

Do Keep it Upbeat

The ill or injured need all the positivity they can get! Refrain from talking about your own troubles, darkness in the world, or other negative topics. You can ask them how they are and questions about their conditions, but watch for clues that they do or don’t want to talk about it.

These basics will help you get started, but you can also learn more about visiting dos and don’ts that are hospital-specific here. There’s also some really great advice here. Most of these helpful gestures are free, and one kind word goes further than you might think. Just make sure you are always thinking about them and what they need (or don’t need), keep it positive, loving, and healing-focused. Oh, and don’t forget to bring your kiddo’s one-of-a-kind, get well soon coloring page!

The I Am Kind: Kindness Coloring Pages set shows children specific acts of kindness that they can easily understand and replicate. Spending time coloring these cute, printable pages helps reinforce that message, whether it’s a coloring page about sharing, listening, supporting others, being polite, giving, or including others. Don’t forget to pair it with the I Am Kind: Kindness Practices for Kids book (available on Amazon) for a complete love and kindness learning experience!

Print and Learn Coloring Pages

Coloring pages are also a great way to download and print your way into learning fun. If you’ve got a young one working on letters and numbers, you can search and find printables that are suited to their unique interests. If they love robots (who isn’t into the Wild Robot these days, right? Love Roz!) be sure to check out these robot shapes coloring pages and robot months of the year coloring pages! These printables focus on fundamentals of basic shapes and letters paired with fun and silly robots that help keep kids’ attention. Whether they are getting ready for school or you are doing home school work, coloring pages you can download and print at home are the fun way to teach and reinforce basic skills.

The Months of the Year coloring pages can also double as an arts and crafts project by turning them into a cute desk or wall calendar. (Hmm, sounds like a perfect get well soon gift!) You can also use them as a little home school or preschool lesson one day each month (for example, the November coloring page and related activities are a great way to learn about fall, and February coloring sheets pair perfectly with Valentine’s Day activities! Kiddos can color all year long!

Amazon is Great, But…

One thing I like about printable coloring pages is that I get to support small product creators on Etsy. (As much as I love Amazon, I don’t really want to give Amazon allll of my money.) Amazon also doesn’t do printable coloring pages that are available instantly – you have to order a coloring book and wait. Even with super fast delivery making things available crazy soon, with Amazon you’ll always have a waiting period. But with Etsy and other sites that offer instant download printables, you can go from idea to coloring as soon as you have the inspiration to search for robot coloring pages, shapes coloring pages, kindness coloring pages, or whatever cute printable product your little ones need. Give Etsy a search and you’ll find literally anything you can think of.
